Prevalence and severity of asthma in 6-7 years old schoolchildren in Urmia, Iranan (ISAAC) study

Introduction: There is increasing prevalence of asthma that is the leading cause of absence of students form school.
Objective: To determine prevalence and severity of asthma and its symptoms in 6-7 years old schoolchildren according to phase one International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) protocol.
Sample: 3000 student 6-7 years old with random cluster sampling in
Instrument: Persian translated ISAAC questionnaire that were completed by students’ parents.
Results: Prevalence of wheezing ever 15.9% (boys 18.8%, girls 13%), wheezing during last 12 months 9.4% (boys11% girls4.7%) wheezing with exercise 4.2% (boys5.5%, girls 2.9%).
Severity of symptoms were: >4 wheezing attack in last 12 months 2.2% , sleep disturbing wheezing 5.7% and speech disturbing wheeze 1.9%.Diagnosed asthma was too low (1.6%)
Conclusion: Prevalence of asthma in 6-7 years old students in Uremia were lower than developed countries. Asthma symptoms are more common in boys than girls.
Under diagnosis of asthma is too high.
